Hi, I’m so excited to see that there is FINALLY a place to talk about Kinefinity cameras. I’ve been refreshing Google searches for the past 6 months to find newly posted footage.

I ordered my KineMINI 4k in June and its finally being shipped out to me (to Los Angeles) after the wait. So in anticipation, can someone who has the camera in house tell me anything that surprised them or disappointed them?

On paper it looks fantastic and blows Blackmagic’s 4k out of the water in my opinion. But the specs seem too good to be true. Also, does anyone know about SSD compatibility outside the Kinemags? Thanks!

In regards to SSD compatiblity I can tell you that people have successfully used the following SSD’s with no reported issues:

    -SanDisk Extreme II

-Samsung 840 Pro SSD (and probably the 850 pro SSD, which is out this month)

    -OWC 6G SSD

I am willing to bet that there are many more brands of SSD’s which work fine with the camera. I’d even go as far to say that pretty much what ever is compatible with the BMPC 4K camera, is also compatible with this.

Of course Kinefinity would like you to purchase their proprietary KineMags (which, by the way, they have recently doubled in GB size while maintaining the same price point!). Because it uses SLC tech (instead of MLC like most SSDs), which might be important to some people. However, as someone else has said before:

“I think you dont need SLC, when your SSDs are broken in 3-5 years than you buy new ones for a much more less price, you dont need SSDs which work for 5-10 years. Only the speed and the stability are important”

From the Kinefinity website regarding KineMags:

    Flash memory chip is different: KineMAG employs very high quality SLC, while consumer type SSD uses MLC even TLC;

    SLC flash chip brings higher reliability, much faster writing speed and longer life naturally;

KineMAG adopts better protection for inner circuits.

TL;DR: People have tested other SSD’s and reported that they work fine. KineMags now lower in price. KineMags uses higher quality SLC tech (compared to MLC like most SSDs). Its down to what you deem important as to which option you go for.

Congrats on your camera being dispatched. Being a recent owner of the kineMINI 4k, I can say with confidence that you wont be disappointed. No hidden surprises with this puppy. Its built like a tank. A beautiful solid piece of machinery.

However you would have to fully understand the camera to make the most out of it. There is quite a bit of help information in the workflow section which you could benefit from.

Apart from that I have not come across anything alarming, which was easily the case with BMD cameras. Kinefinity is serious about their products and I hope they keep the same level of Quality control in the future.

Im actually liking the camera a lot. Knowing more about it really helps because most times if something didnt happen the way i expected its user error. We really do need an English manual for this camera soon.

The camera is built really well, the fan is really silent now. The only thing I do find feels flimsy is the door latch to the SSD compartment. Its weird when the door is open the latch is sturdy and doesnt wiggle around but when you close the door it feels really lose. BUT there is also a lock on that door latch as well which locks it in….Is mine the only one like this or is it fine? Its hard to tell it feel lose but with all these locks and it being tight when the door is open I cant tell.

But saying that one thing I always feel like I chose the better camera in this price range

To my test, Samsung 840 Pro can undertake the throughput of 4K and HiSpeed recording from KineMini surely. I’ve not tested other SSD yet.

Rod, the SSD door feels flimsy to me, too. But it does work. The other concern is the jog wheel. It’s too frequently used.

I too have been refreshing my google search daily for about 5 months. I should have mine in the next couple of weeks.

Regarding ssd’s, I recently bought a superSspeed 128gb slc from amazon( they are currently out) but either I fried it with a poor sata cable, or it was dead on arrival… Fortunately the company-mydigitaldiscount said that they would replace it.

I will still probably go with an 840 pro as I have already heard the testament of their stability.

I would like to see more stress tests on these. Nothing worse thn getting back and seeing the best take is bad because of dropped frames or corruption,

I have one of the rated HD from BMD back when I was looking at there cameras. Its the kingston 240G V200+ and is ok for the normal modes but not 4k or highspeed.

I also had a 64G Kinemag and then just ended up buying the 128G one because of the price drop or capacity increase for current prices.

I report that SSD Crucial M550 512GB works well.

It could be good to make a list of SSD that are reported to be OK with KineMini at 4K.

Also I checked all my lenses with EF mount. And:

LENSES THAT WORKS (camera can control them):

    – CANON 24mm f/1.4 L

    – CANON 35mm f/1.4 L

    – CANON 50mm f/1.2 L

    – CANON 85mm f/1.2 L

    – CANON 24-105mm f/4

    – CANON 70-200mm f/1.2 L IS (IS doesn’t work)

    – CANON 35mm f/2.0 IS (IS doesn’t work)

    – TOKINA 11-16mm f/2.8

    LENS DOESN’T WORK:

    – CANON 24-70mm f/2.8 USM L – this is an old version so that might be a reason.

Hi filmcyfrowy, how do you determine IS works or not? Thanks.

    Hi

It would be very good to be able to save USER PRESETS on a USB KEY or through WIFI.

PRESETS should include SHOOTING PARAMETERS and SLATE.
